Cultivating a Culture of Inclusion — The "Breaking Barriers in Schools" Outreach Gains Momentum

📅 May 14, 2026

The DADE Initiative is thrilled to share the progress of our flagship national outreach program, "Breaking Barriers in Schools."

This initiative is currently sweeping through secondary schools across various states in Nigeria, challenging misconceptions and planting the seeds of empathy in the hearts of the next generation.

Why Schools?
Change begins with education. Many students with visible and non-visible disabilities face stigma and bullying simply because their peers do not understand their experiences. By bringing disability awareness directly into the classroom, we are not just teaching a lesson; we are building a more inclusive future for every Nigerian child.

Impact of the First Phase
The first phase of the program is currently ongoing, led by a dedicated team of trained volunteers who are facilitating interactive sessions with students and school administrators.

Key highlights of the current phase include:

Demystifying Disability: Helping students understand that disability is a part of human diversity.

Visible vs. Non-Visible: Educating the school community on often-overlooked conditions like learning disabilities and chronic health issues.

Actionable Empathy: Empowering students to become allies and support their peers with disabilities within the school environment.

The Success of Our Volunteers
Our impact is driven by our incredible volunteers. Through a rigorous orientation process, we have equipped our "Inclusion Ambassadors" with the tools to facilitate conversations that are simple, engaging, and deeply transformative. From Kaduna to Abuja and beyond, these volunteers are documenting incredible stories of students taking the "Inclusion Pledge."

Looking Ahead: Breaking Barriers 2.0
While we continue to roll out Phase 1, the DADE Initiative leadership is already in the advanced planning stages for Breaking Barriers 2.0. This next iteration will build on our current success, reaching even more states and incorporating deeper structural recommendations for school administrations to ensure long-term accessibility.

"Inclusion benefits everyone. When we break barriers in our schools, we build a stronger, kinder society for us all."

Stay tuned for our monthly impact report, where we will share the specific numbers and stories from our most recent school visits.
