Voices of Inclusion: What Accessibility and Inclusion Mean to Persons with Disabilities

📅 October 13, 2026

September was an extraordinary month of advocacy at DADE Initiative. Globally, the month recognizes Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month, International Month of Deaf Awareness / Sign Language Awareness, and Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

At DADE Initiative, true inclusion is not just a policy, it is our core identity. To celebrate these milestones, we launched an Advocacy Icon Spotlight Campaign across our community channels, inviting members from our Spinal Cord Injury and Hearing Impaired clusters, as well as our dedicated sign language interpreters to share what accessibility, inclusion, and advocacy mean to them in their own words.

From employment and education to physical access and health equity, here is how our leaders, advocates, and community icons define true inclusion.

♿ Perspectives from our Spinal Cord Injury Cluster
For individuals living with spinal cord injuries, accessibility goes far beyond physical infrastructure. It is a fundamental human right that impacts dignity, independence, and full civic participation.

"Accessibility and inclusion mean creating a world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, background, color, race, religion, or tribe, feels welcomed, valued, and empowered to participate fully in all walks of life. Think of it as a building that has ramps alongside stairs, video captions, white canes, Braille, and sign language interpreters—small changes that make a huge difference! It’s about ensuring everyone has a seat at the table and a voice that’s heard." - Olusola David Ojo ÉníÓbànké

"Accessibility is not a privilege; it is a right that ensures everyone can participate equally in society. A truly inclusive society is one where every person can enter, participate, contribute, and belong without barriers. Accessibility removes barriers, inclusion opens doors, and equality gives everyone a fair opportunity to thrive. Nothing about us without us.” - Abiodun Christianah

"As persons with disabilities living with spinal cord injuries, I want to see the government and the community in general make life easier by providing real accessibility and total inclusion for all PWDs." — Shuaibu Halliru (Vice Chairman, SCI Association Kano)

"To me, accessibility means removing physical, digital, communication, transportation, and social barriers so that people can access buildings, education, healthcare, employment, information, and public services. Inclusion goes beyond simply providing access—it means ensuring that people with disabilities are valued, respected, heard, represented, and actively involved in decisions that affect their lives. Accessibility opens the door; inclusion makes sure everyone is welcomed and given a seat at the table." — Olanrewaju Isaac Idowu

"Accessibility and inclusion mean making sure everyone, regardless of their abilities or differences, has equal opportunities to participate, belong, and be treated with respect." — Abigail Michael

"Inclusion deserves a better priority." — Abdulsalam Muhammed Kazeem

"For a person with a physical disability, accessibility and inclusion are not about help or charity. They are about rights, dignity, and the freedom to live the same life as anyone else. Accessibility is the removal of barriers that stop a person from using a space, service, or information independently." — Bilkisu Isyaku Ibrahim

🤟 Perspectives from our Hearing Impaired & Deaf Cluster
For the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community, true inclusion centres on communication access, sign language recognition, accessible education, and equal employment opportunities.

"True inclusion begins when communication is not treated as a privilege, but as a right. Everyone deserves to be heard, understood, and given an equal opportunity to participate without constantly struggling to fit into systems that were not designed with them in mind." — Safyan Bashi Muhammed

"This September, during Deaf Awareness Month, we celebrate the achievements, resilience, creativity, and invaluable contributions of the Deaf community. Accessible communication, including sign language, is the bridge that breaks barriers and connects us all. When we embrace inclusion, we empower voices that speak with their hands and hearts." — Sani Ishaq Babachanka (Chairman, Kano State Association of the Deaf)

"A community where people, regardless of their social, religious, or economic background, are treated equally and heard through accessible communication, equal opportunities, and inclusive platforms across all sectors is an inclusive society where everyone can contribute and enjoy life to the fullest." — Auwalu Ismaila Salisu

"Inclusion means everyone has a seat at the table, and accessibility is the bridge that helps us all get there." — Muhammad Kabir Abubakar

"True inclusion means making sure every voice can be heard, including the voices of deaf people. Sign language is not just communication—it is connection, dignity, and equal opportunity." — Hadiza Mukhtar

"Deaf is not a barrier. Deaf is not a limitation!" — Ayuba Tukur Harande

"I am deaf, and I am proud of who I am. I don't let people look down on my disability." — Isah Haruna Ismaila

"Inclusion means creating a society where every Person with a Disability can participate fully and access essential services without barriers. In healthcare, no one should be left behind. Every person deserves accessible information, effective communication, respectful treatment, and quality healthcare, including maternal and child health services. Disability should never be a barrier to dignity or health." — Nafiu Uba Indabawa (Advocate for Disability Inclusion & Accessible Health Services)

"To me, accessibility means creating a space where someone like me, who hears little and speaks softly, can still belong and shine." — Ahmad Abdullahi

"I want to see established Islamic schools specifically for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing where our people can learn seamlessly. True inclusion begins with education—every individual deserves access to learning environments designed specifically for their needs, faith, and identity." — Hauwa’u Umar Datti

"BREAK BARRIERS. BUILD COMMUNICATION. CREATE INCLUSION. Communication should never be a barrier. Support sign language, respect Deaf rights, promote equal opportunities, and say NO to discrimination!" — Ibrahim Baffa Banghi (Social Media & Photography, Kano State Association of the Deaf)

"To me, inclusion means building a society where every person is respected, valued, and given an equal opportunity to participate. As a Deaf person, true inclusion means having access to communication, education, employment, leadership, and decision-making. When we choose inclusion, we build a stronger, fairer, and more united society where no one is left behind." — Comr. Bashir Idris Adamu [El-basi] (Secretary General, Kano State Association of the Deaf)

"Searching for a job shouldn't mean fighting against invisible barriers. Inclusion in the workplace begins with accessible hiring, equal representation, and valuing ability above all else." — Comr. Ayuba Sani Ibrahim (Youth Deaf Leader, Tarauni LG, Kano State)

Bridging the Gap: The Role of Support Systems
Inclusion requires intentional bridge-builders who ensure seamless communication between communities. We closed our awareness campaign by honoring the essential role of professional sign language interpreters.

"Inclusivity and accessibility mean making sure that everyone, including people with special needs, is accepted, valued, included, and able to access everyday activities and services without unnecessary barriers." — Grace O. Anafi (Sign Language Interpreter)

Our Ongoing Commitment
At DADE Initiative, amplifying these voices is not restricted to a single awareness month, it is our daily mission. We extend our deepest gratitude to every member who shared their vision with us. Together, we will continue pushing for policy action, barrier-free spaces, accessible education, and equal opportunity for all!
