NIGERIA — In a move to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to become the primary narrators of their own experiences, the DADE Foundation hosted a transformative webinar titled “The Power of Storytelling in Disability Inclusion Advocacy.”
Led by advocate Fatimah Usman, the session moved beyond legal jargon to focus on the human element of change. The core message was simple but profound: While facts inform, stories transform.
Shifting the Narrative: From "What" to "Why"
The masterclass challenged the traditional way disability is discussed in Nigeria. Rather than focusing on medical "limitations," participants were taught to use storytelling to highlight environmental and systemic barriers.
“A fact tells us that a building has no ramp,” the session noted. “A story shows us how that missing ramp prevents a brilliant woman from reaching her office and contributing to the economy. Stories humanize the data.”
Key Takeaways for Self-Advocacy:
1.The Human Face of Policy: Participants learned how to ground high-level policies in real-life experiences to make them more relatable to policymakers.
2.Challenging Stereotypes: Training on how to center "Ability and Talent" over "Assumptions," ensuring PWDs are seen as vital contributors to society.
The "From Story to Action" Framework: Fatimah Usman introduced a strategic three-step approach for every advocate:
. What needs to change?
. Who can make that change?
. What specific action can we take?
Dignity in Media: A critical segment on sharing stories on social media with consent and dignity, ensuring that advocacy never turns into "pity-seeking."
Every Story Fights Stigma
The webinar concluded with a powerful reminder that every time a person with a disability shares their journey with purpose, they are dismantling a brick of stigma. The session served as a call to action for PWDs across Nigeria to speak up, share their truths, and lead the conversation on inclusion.
